If you don't already know New Zealand Jewellery brand Elliott Metal, you best get acquainted. Local silversmith Gabe Elliott, who lends her name to the brand, is the ultimate cool kid. Taking notes from pop culture all her inspired designs pay homage to moments in her life; referencing formative films, their characters, musicians, or indeed more personal memories, each design is named and infused with a particular reverence for the past.
So we asked Gabe to choose her 5 favourite jewellery designs & tell us all about the reference point.
From the Rave Replica Collection, Gabe chose her first piece as the Liam Howlett Bangle. Liam Howlett (Pictured far left) is a founding member of the musical force behind The Prodigy. A reenvisioning of rave & body piercing culture from the '90s and early 2000s, that is bold in reference but minimalist in approach. The Liam Howlett Bangle features a rounded bangle set with a sterling silver ball. A stand-alone piece or ideal for layering with your existing jewellery get up. Also check out from the collection the matching ring & earrings, or the Prodigy frontman Keith Flint range coming back into stock soon!
Gabe's second choice is from her Punk Replica collection. Named for the infamous Nancy, girlfriend to Sex Pistol - Sid Vicious, the silver Nancy Spungen Twinset Bangle and matching ring are a reference to her volatile demeanour and a reimagined handcuff.
Next up is Gabe's latest additions to her collections, The Leeloo Hoop and Stud Earrings. A minimalistic vision of earpieces for the lead character from the film the Fifth Element; Leeloominaï Lekatariba Lamina-Tchaï Ekbat De Sebat or Leeloo for short. "I really appreciated that Jean Paul Gaultier's costume for Leeloo throughout The Fifth Element didn’t include jewellery. His designs are so timeless yet 100% capture the era the film is set in but also the era it was shot,1997." Creating over 1000 individual costumes for The Fifth Element, Gaultier's work has proved to be one of the most ambitious conceptual achievements in the history of cinematic wardrobe.
In an ode to twisted love, Gabe's fourth choice on the list is the complimentary rings of the infamous Knox couple. The Mickey Knox and Mallory Knox Rings designs are inspired by the film Natural Born Killers and here, Gabe reimagines the rings exchanged by the couple from their wedding scene.
And finally, the Donita Sparks Ring takes its namesake from the iconic punk L7 Hellraiser. Recognised for subverting and transcending the expectations of performers of the late '80s & early '90s, the Donita Sparks Ring lives up to the hype. Featuring a curved form and round ball finishing it, Gabe designed the band to protrude with the idea being that it could double as a guitar pick or vice tool for Donita.
